Are tabloids biased?

In light of the "huge" Beyonce and Jay-Z wedding that supposedly happened recently, I stumbled across this interesting article about what "types" of people are chosen to be on the covers of magazines. In other words, which race is more newsworthy? The article in question discussed how a top tabloid editor (name of tabloid withheld) was recently asked why the biggest story of the week didn't make headlines in this particular tabloid and a number of other tabloids (There are 5 big ones total). The editor was quoted as say it was because "African Americans don't sell covers." Beyonce and Jay-Z, one of the most infamous power couples in the music industry, haven't yet confirmed their alleged wedding, AND they were quite secretive about it. So there are no photos circulating yet. One of the tabloid insiders adds that this could be one of the reasons why the news didn't make the main front-page story, but were instead given a small box in the corner. "[Exclusive wedding pictures] would have made the story bigger," he stated. The article also mention how, even if they WERE to be the main front page story, they would not have gotten paid as much BECAUSE they are black. " Eva Longoria can get $1 million for wedding photos, but without the expectation of cover sales, Beyoncé might have gotten as little as $250,000 if she had sold hers," says a top editor." A black magazine editor, Flo Anthony, was asked about the issue and she stated that, even though the previous statement was very racist, it is true. " "It is hard for African-Americans in magazines. Only a few people, like Will Smith and Halle Berry, are mainstream. Editors really still think that only blond hair and blue eyes sell magazines," she states. Us Weekly was the only tabloid that featured Beyonce on the cover this week. Us Weekly's editor, Janice Min, stated that you would normally hear statements like "African Americans dont sell covers" in a discussion among all-white editors.

I think that this is terrible, especially with them being media outlet, I think it is very unethical but on the other hand, I am a little torn; for a number of reasons. I don't believe that race is a factor in how many covers sell. It all depends on how popular you. Beyonce is black, yes. But she has MILLIONS of white fans. Honestly, this article means nothing to me because in my opinion, Us Weekly is the only credible tabloid there is out there and the other ones are BS and barely stand in comparison to Us Weekly. So as long as she was featured on THIS one, the other ones don't matter anyway. Also, I agree with the editor that mentioned the exclusive pictures. First of all, they never officially confirmed that they are married, and there ARE not pictures. At most, there are pictures of certain guests' arrivals. So it would be kind of hard to feature a story on something without valid photos because most of the time, that's all people are interested in. Unless these tabloids choose to use eyewash photos which would definitely probably anger the readers more because they want current photos.
