Boycotting the Olympics?

Just recently it has been reported that Obama is now urging President Bush to boycott the Olympic ceremonies in Beijing. He joins a number of other candidates like McCain and Clinton who also support Bush boycotting the Olympics. It was Senator Hilary Clinton that was leading the movement in boycotting the Olympics and urging her fellow candidates to do the same. Activists are also urging world leaders to stay away from the Olympics hoping to send a message to China concerning the human rights of the Tibetan people and the genocide going on in Darfur. "If the Chinese do not take steps to help stop the genocide in Darfur and to respect the dignity, security and human rights of the Tibetan people, then the president should boycott the opening ceremonies," Obama said. "As I have communicated in public and to the president, it is past time for China to respect the human rights of the Tibetan people, to allow foreign journalists and diplomats access to the region, and to engage the Dalai Lama in meaningful talks about the future of Tibet." Senator Clinton believes that the threat of a boycott will be useful leverage in dealing with China.
I believe this might create some animosity between China and the United States. The Olympic Games is a world wide event that all countries can participate in, but by President Bush boycotting it because of the fact it is held in Beijing makes the matter personal. I understand that it is for a greater cause but the Chinese people might take offense to it.
