U.S. Marines
Now that our blog has been opened to ANY ethical issues, I wanted to know if anyone ran across the news a few months back about a U.S. Marine that tossed a puppy off a cliff in Iraq. David Mortari of the United States Marines was video taped by a fellow solider throwing a puppy off a cliff in Iraq. Here is a link to the video (this video is graphic so be forewarned): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jHQhoUgqKr8. This was a pretty big deal a few months back and it was all over the news; animal activists were outraged. Many ethical issues are brought up; in the U.S., such an action is highly illegal and punishable as a felony and jail time. Should Mortari be held to the same legalities of those in the United States while serving our country in Iraq? Many reporters when interviewing superiors for the Marines asked if he would be court marshalled, only to be answered by "there is an internal investigation going on". Is the Marine Corps watching out for one of their own? Are they prosecuting justice in the proper way? What is the appropriate approach to a situation such as this. The worst part about the entire situation was that Mortari showed no remorse and was almost giddy/happy when he did that. The Marines should take the proper action and court marshal Mortari for a heinous, illegal act, and for representing his country in a piss poor manner.
